Just a brief update but according to a recent news item in the Daily Telegraph, a filing was made last Friday with the SEC. The Virgin Boss, Sir Richard Branson has cut his stake in the cable group to 6.5% from 10.45%, a move which now sees him change from second to fourth place in the shareholder register. The largest shareholder in Virgin Media is now Fidelity, with a 13.37% stake. Franklin Mutual Advisors comes second with a stake nearing 10%. Wellington Management Company has a 8.58% stake.]]>

Virgin Media was forced to change one of its mailing adverts this week after a member of the public complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). A direct mailing from Virgin Media stated “Dear XXXX, If you think switching to the Mother of all Broadband for only £4.50 a month is a long drawn out process think again”. The mailing included a table, which was headed “PICK A FIBRE OPTIC BROADBAND SPEED TO SUIT YOU” and detailed Virgin Media broadband packages of varying download speeds. Virgin Media has unveiled its highly anticipated 50Mbps broadband service today. It is currently the fastest domestic connection available to UK web surfers. Today (December 15th), Virgin Media held a press conference announcing the news of its release. It will be priced at either £35 per month if you take a phone line (£11 per month, total cost = £46 per month). Or £51 if it is taken as a single product. 50Mbps will have unlimited downloads and there will be no traffic management, though it will remain to be seen if this is a permanent decision. There has been no official word on the upload speeds but these have been rumoured to be 1.75Mbit and will increase to 2.5Mbit in 2009.]]>

Virgin Media sent us word this morning that they have doubled their ADSL connection speeds to ‘up to 16Mb’. The cable provider says new and existing customers using Virgin Media’s ADSL broadband service, which is now known as ‘Virgin Media National’, will be able to double their existing broadband speed from 8Mb to up to 16Mb.]]>
